Rich Johnstone

Director of Theological Field Education | Chair, Leadership Formation | Associate Professor of Leadership Formation

Rich Johnstone began teaching at Gateway from 2012-2015 while also serving with the North American Mission Board.  He returned to Gateway in 2021 as trustee-elected faculty.  He serves as the director of theological field education as well as associate professor of leadership formation.  He also chairs the Leadership Formation Department. 

Johnstone served for 20 years as an endorsed missionary of North American Mission Board, most recently serving in the San Francisco Bay Area.  There he worked with churches and partners to develop and mobilize church planting missionaries to engage unreached communities with the gospel.  Prior to that, he served two Baptist associations in California as Director of Missions with a focus on church health and multiplication.  Johnstone began ministry in California as a bi-vocational pastor, working also in a chemical analysis laboratory.

Prior to coming to California to attend Golden Gate Seminary, Johnstone lived in urban Chicago, suburban Cook County, and small-town Texas.

Rich and his wife, Rhonda, have three grown children who live on the West Coast. Johnstone is a trail runner who also enjoys gravel cycling.
