Position Description: We as First Baptist Church prayerfully seek the man called by God to serve as our pastor, who preaches and teaches the truth of God’s Word and leads our members in spiritual growth and development. As pastor and shepherd, he should provide leadership for all functions of the church. The pastor serves as moderator for all business aspects of the church including supervision of other paid church staff. The pastor will be accountable to the congregation and leadership, coordinating through deacons and appointed committees. He plans all worship services and serves as spiritual leader of the church. The pastor leads the membership to fulfill the functions of the church: worship, minister, educate, witness and fellowship. The pastor serves to coordinate in the community to foster a healthy spiritual relationship in the surrounding area.

Qualifications: Licensed and ordained seminary graduate with more than five years of ministry experience is preferred, but we will also consider other Bible college credentials and other ministry experience. The church supports the growth of the pastor in all areas of his education or learning. The pastor shall meet the spiritual qualifications indicated in Acts 20:28, I Timothy 3:1-7 and I Peter 5:1-4. He should be an effective communicator with a leadership vision who emphasizes discipleship and spiritual growth. The pastor needs to have a mentoring spirit with the church membership. He should emphasize the importance of strong families and communicate well with all ages. Our preference is that he be married. He should be a counselor and teacher who enables persons to learn and understand spiritual truths and be a consistent witness for Christ who leads church members in effective outreach ministries to draw people to Christ and grow the congregation spiritually and physically. He needs to assist others with personal and/or spiritual problems.

Additional Information: Salary package ($50,000 to $60,000) is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications and subject to increase based upon future spiritual and physical growth of the church. While our preference is a full time pastor, possible combinations of a bivocational and entrepreneurial nature will be considered.

First Baptist Church, Hinton, WV is affiliated locally with the Mountain State Baptist Association (msbawv.org); state wide with the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists (wvcsb.org); and nationally with the Southern Baptist Convention (sbc.net). Ministries of First Baptist Church presently include Sunday morning worship service, Wednesday evening prayer meeting and bible study and Sunday school classes. Past ministries have included Sunday evening worship service, Wednesday evening Team Kids with supper for attendees which included many local kids who were not members of the church and Sunday evening youth group. First Baptist Church supports missionary work conducted by the Southern Baptist Convention. First Baptist Church supports and takes part in church camp with the Greenbrier Valley Baptist Youth Camp. Hinton churches cooperate with an annual Church walk program at Christmas that visits several area churches. First Baptist Church is active in this event.

First Baptist Church was founded in 1872. The church building is listed in the National Historic District register and consists of 20,118 square foot of space, includes a sanctuary with a seating capacity of about 300, a baptismal, 10 Sunday school rooms, 2 kitchens, a large fellowship hall in 2 adjoining rooms, a nursery, Pastor’s office, Secretary’s office, a small library, a choir room and paved parking for 37 vehicles with additional parking along the street and adjacent business parking areas. The current building was constructed in 1913.

The Area: Hinton, WV is a small historical town with a current population of 2,300. Hinton is the county seat of Summers County with a population of 12,500. Residents of Summers County enjoy a wonderful small town, laid back quality of life. The area is blessed to have three rivers, New River, Greenbrier River and Bluestone River. Hinton is home to Bluestone Dam and the 2000 acre Bluestone Lake. The area includes Pipestem Resort State Park and Bluestone State Park. Winterplace Ski Resort is less than 40 minutes from Hinton. The area offers the enjoyment experiences of all four seasons. The surrounding area offers unlimited recreational activities including white water rafting, golfing, fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, bird watching, rock climbing and snow skiing. The 14,000 acre Bluestone Wildlife Management Area surrounds Bluestone Lake. Hinton is 5 minutes from the 80,000 acre New River Gorge National Park & Preserve which includes Sandstone Falls. The 4-Star Greenbrier Resort and numerous golf courses are an hour or less drive. Within a two-hour’s drive are located some of the finest recreational facilities in West Virginia including whitewater rafting / fishing on the New River and Gauley River.

Hinton has grocery stores, restaurants, banks, auto parts stores, hardware and feed supply stores, hospital, dentist and most other small town amenities. Hinton is also the Summers County Seat and the economic and governmental hub of the county. The Hinton Railroad Museum, the Graham House, the Campbell Flanagan Murrell House and other museums provide glimpses into the county’s history.

Summers County Appalachian Regional Hospital (SCARH) is located in Hinton. SCARH is part of Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) which includes 12 hospitals in West Virginia and Kentucky.  Larger hospitals are located in the area at Beckley, Princeton and Lewisburg.

Hinton is within a short drive of higher population areas of Charleston, Blacksburg, Beckley, Princeton and Lewisburg. Hinton has easy access to I-64, I-77, I-79, US 460 and US 19. A picturesque Amtrak train ride from Hinton connects the area to DC, Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and many other locations.

Charleston is West Virginia’s state capitol and is an easy 90 minute drive. Charleston is West Virginia’s largest city with a population of some 50,000 and a metro area of 225,000. There is a commercial airport with daily flights to most major hubs.The Charleston Airport, Beckley Airport and Lewisburg Airport all offer jet service to major hubs.

Beckley is a 30 minute drive, has a population of 34,000, and is the county seat of Raleigh County. Lewisburg, (45-minute drive), which is the Greenbrier County seat, was voted the Coolest Small Town in America. The West Virginia State Fair and many festivals are located at Lewisburg. The world-renowned Greenbrier Resort, with 800 rooms and 1600 employees, is located in the little town of White Sulphur Springs.
