Position: Children’s Minister

Job Description

General Responsibilities:
The Children’s Minister is responsible to the pastor for guiding the church’s overall preschool and children’s ministries. (Preschool ministry includes birth—pre-k; children’s ministry includes K —5th grades.)


Leadership Responsibilities:
1. Foster a loving environment of growth, discipleship and caring for OVBC children with the goal of preparing them to eventually become disciples of Jesus Christ. Encourage and assist parents as they raise their children in the knowledge of the Lord.
2. Develop and lead the OVBC Children’s ministry program (Sunday School, Wednesday nights, etc.) and special events targeted to preschoolers and/or children, such as Vacation Bible School, camps, etc. This includes effective and timely planning, coordination of staff and resources, effective implementation of plans, and evaluation of the overall work and direction of these elements.
3. Create and lead a children’s ministry team to plan events and ministry emphases, as well as, execute the weekly children’s ministry schedule. It is an expectation that the children’s minister establish a process that allows them to regularly participate in Sunday worship.
4. Oversee the enlistment and training of all paid and volunteer staff for all preschool and children’s ministry assignments. Create an annual training plan that includes special training events, ongoing training opportunities, and personal enrichment for all preschool and children’s leaders.
5. Regularly evaluate preschool and children’s ministry needs for new units, space, leadership, curriculum materials, and other resources.
6. Prepare an annual budget for assigned ministry areas to be submitted to the Ops Ministry Team and approved by the ELT (Elder Leadership Team). Oversee budget processes and expenditures for preschool and children’s ministries.
7. Work with the ELT and church staff to guide the church in developing, implementing, and maintaining appropriate security and screening guidelines for volunteers and staff serving in preschool and children’s ministries.

Other Responsibilities:
1. Coordinate with the church staff in the use of ongoing and special means to communicate to the church family and community preschool and children’s ministry needs and opportunities. Provide content as requested, and work with staff to maintain the sections of the church website related to preschool and children’s ministries.
2. Work with the Student and Young Adult minister to maintain consistent and comprehensive policy and procedure manuals for all preschool, children, and student ministries, including safety, security, and hygiene.
3. Participate in personal continuing education in order to stay aware of up-to-date materials, educational methods and resources, security and hygiene guidelines, etc., related to the physical, emotional, and spiritual development of preschoolers and children.
4. Stay informed of all relevant church policies and procedures and applicable local, state, and federal regulations related to the care of preschoolers and children to ensure preschool and children’s policies and guidelines are in compliance.
5. As requested by the Lead Pastor, assist in worship planning and participation (e.g., engaging preschoolers and children in worship services).

Job Requirements:
1. Personal statement of faith in Jesus Christ and personal lifestyle consistent with that confession. Personal affirmation of the inspiration and authority of the whole Bible.
2. Commitment to the mission of the church.
3. Affirmation of the Baptist Faith and Message (2000).
4. Ability to state a sense of God’s general calling to church ministry and His calling to ministry related to preschoolers, children, and their families.
5. Understanding of the unique needs and learning styles of preschoolers and children and personal desire to enable those in these age groups to develop spiritually.
6. Ability to enlist, train, and supervise both volunteer and paid workers.
7. Attitudes of openness, humility, and respect for others. Ability to receive and give constructive criticism.
8. Sensitivity to issues that should remain confidential and ability to treat all such matters with confidentiality.
9. Ability to communicate clearly in both oral and written forms.
10. Able to think outside the box
11. Able to be productive with minimal direction from ELT
12. Must be a member Oak Valley Baptist Church (or join at time of employment).
13. Be an active participant in the vision and strategy of OVBC throughout employment.
14. Submit to a background check.
15. Must be a team player and willing to help with other ministries if the need arises.


Standard Hours/Expectations:
Full time, salaried

Reports to: Elder Leadership Team with Lead Pastor as direct supervisor.
